In an exciting move towards greener shipping options, Golden Island Diesel Oil Trading Pte Ltd (Golden Island) is making waves in the maritime industry. The company has become one of the first in Singapore’s bunkering sector to test B30 biofuel. This pioneering effort aligns with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) environmental goals for 2030 and 2050, as the industry seeks to transition to cleaner fuels.

On April 13, 2023, Golden Island made significant progress by supplying B30 biofuel to its 4,700 metric tonnes (mt) bunker tanker, Double Happiness. This trial took place at Tanjung Langsat in Malaysia, where about 23 mt of B30 gasoil was delivered using a truck-to-ship method. Tomohiro Yamano, General Manager of the Marine Fuel Department at Golden Island, explained that the main goal was to test the compatibility of B30 biofuel with their powerplant and evaluate its performance based on the engine manufacturer's specifications.

Although trials with B24 grade biofuels are already common, Golden Island's initiative to explore B30 biofuel is a standout feature in Singapore’s bunkering landscape. This bold step shows the company's readiness to embrace innovative fuel options and positions it as a leader in the effort to decarbonize the maritime sector.

Yamano mentioned that Golden Island intends to expand B30 biofuel trials across its entire fleet, which includes nine vessels engaged in marine fuel supply, oily waste disposal, and freshwater operations. However, it's important to note that these trials are temporary; the vessels will switch back to using marine gas oil (MGO) once the testing wraps up. The firm is also planning future loadings of B30 biofuel from Singapore ports, indicating a commitment to further these sustainable trials.

The urgency behind these initiatives is heightened by the recently released “Maritime Singapore Decarbonisation Blueprint” by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). This strategic plan includes significant carbon reduction targets, such as a mandatory 15% decrease in absolute emissions from 2021 levels by 2023, with an ambitious goal to cut emissions by 50% from 2030 levels by 2050.

Additionally, the MPA has issued a factsheet titled “Strengthening Singapore’s Competitiveness as a Hub Port and International Maritime Centre,” which outlines various local initiatives aimed at boosting the performance of the maritime industry. These documents reflect a strong government commitment to sustainable maritime practices, emphasizing the necessity for companies like Golden Island to innovate.

The successful implementation of B30 biofuel trials is a critical step toward achieving Singapore's sustainability objectives in the maritime sector. This endeavor not only responds to global environmental directives but also showcases the proactive attitude of Singapore's bunkering industry in seeking cleaner fuel alternatives.

As pressure mounts on the maritime sector to reduce its carbon emissions, Golden Island’s actions serve as a shining example of leadership in the pursuit of sustainable shipping solutions. By embracing these trials, the company contributes significantly to meeting IMO guidelines and highlights the importance of innovation in protecting our marine ecosystems for generations to come.

Golden Island’s dedication to testing B30 biofuel can inspire other companies in the maritime industry. This initiative points toward a greener future in shipping, emphasizing the need for collaboration and action in the journey toward sustainability.
