Tianjin, China – A significant step forward in sustainable maritime operations was recently made at the Vopak Tianjin terminal, as Golden Island's brand-new bunker vessel, the Golden Antares, loaded a substantial consignment of ISCC EU-certified green methanol. This pivotal event underscores the growing collaboration and robust infrastructure supporting the global shift towards low-carbon marine fuels.
The 5,000 tonnes of green methanol, supplied by The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas), was successfully transferred to the Vopak Tianjin facility. From there, it was loaded onto the Golden Antares, an IMO Type 2 vessel specifically designed for the efficient and safe transport of alternative fuels like methanol and biofuels. This delivery serves as a crucial component of Golden Island's pioneering green methanol bunkering trials in Singapore.
A Collaborative Effort for a Greener Future:
This operation highlights the strong partnership between key industry players:
Golden Island: Committed to spearheading low-carbon solutions, Golden Island is at the forefront of introducing green methanol bunkering services, particularly in a leading maritime hub like Singapore. The Golden Antares represents a significant investment in their vision for a decarbonized shipping industry.
Towngas: As a leading producer of green methanol, Towngas is demonstrating its capability to reliably supply certified sustainable fuels from its Inner Mongolia facility. Their commitment extends to expanding production capacity and establishing a comprehensive green methanol supply chain across Asia.
Vopak Tianjin: The Vopak Tianjin terminal played a critical role in facilitating this transfer, showcasing its readiness and strategic importance in the evolving green energy supply chain in the Asia-Pacific region. Tianjin Vopak's green methanol storage capacity and state-of-the-art liquid chemical terminals are instrumental in supporting such initiatives.

The Golden Antares: A Vessel for Change
The Golden Antares, with its 7,999 DWT capacity, is engineered for efficiency and environmental responsibility. Its ability to handle green methanol and biofuel blends (up to B100) positions it as a vital asset in the transition away from conventional fossil fuels. The use of green methanol offers a substantial environmental benefit, with a carbon intensity reduction of over 75% compared to traditional Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO).
Looking Ahead: Building a Sustainable Maritime Ecosystem
This successful loading operation at Vopak Tianjin is more than just a logistical achievement; it's a testament to the collaborative spirit driving the maritime industry's decarbonization journey. As the demand for cleaner fuels grows, partnerships like these, leveraging advanced infrastructure and innovative vessels, will be crucial in building a resilient and sustainable global marine fuel supply chain.
Golden Island, along with its partners, is committed to further expanding green methanol deliveries, paving the way for a more environmentally responsible future for shipping worldwide.
